For the month of June, we are focusing on chiropractic adjustments. Addressing common questions like what they are and what are they doing. First off, most people think of chiropractors being just spine related. The body is composed of many joints, muscles, and movements all around the body. The foot, shoulder, knee, etc., but everything is composed of joint capsule that attaches bones together. There are two bones and a fluid capsule that goes around the area. Typically, people think of a chiropractic adjustment as just the popping noise. In the low back there are joints that have a capsule around them. With an adjustment, you will spread those 2 bones apart far enough that a gas bubble is created in the capsule of fluid and then when it stretches too far it will pop and you get your traditional “cracking” noise. So, the popping is just touching the surface of what is happening in your body. There are many neurological changes that occur with an adjustment. I like to explain it as hitting the reset button in your brain for that area. As chiropractors we are not relocating bones that are severely out of place on a regular basis and sure it can help with alignment. However, the big change is the neurological input that goes into that area, whether that is the foot, shoulder, neck, etc. Therefore, so many things can change around the area. The new range of motion is the most common factor that you pushed the area a little more than what it is used to and now you have an increase amount of motion in the area. You will also have a decreased amount of muscle tension in the area after an adjustment. Plus, you are putting a lot more awareness into the area that was just adjusted and will increase your proprioception, or mental awareness of the area, and help you move better. So, there is a lot more going on than just the area popped and now it feels better, and there is more benefit than just now you can move further. Therefore, adjustments can make such a large benefit and can be a quick response, not always right away, but can usually improve symptoms at least a little bit right then. I like working on extremities, like feet and shoulders, as well as the spine to help people get that little extra help they need to do the things that you love to do.
