Posture and Tech/Text Neck

Neck pain is a common problem I see in my practice. I want to start with posture, and you may have heard the term “text neck” or “tech neck”. Again, there is no such thing as perfect posture. Any position that sit in or stand in for a long period of time can cause problems. Our bodies are meant to move. This idea of text neck is that we are constantly looking down at our mobile devices. We are rarely looking up. Or the idea of tech neck is more that we are pushing our chin out and having our head in front of our body. We are making ourselves have tight necks because our head is out in front and the muscles on the back of the neck have to constantly fire to be able to hold our head up. Instead, keeping the head above the shoulder puts a lot less pressure on the neck muscles along the back of the neck. Neck position will change how much tension goes into your neck. Patients are always coming in with tight neck and shoulder muscles because they are always having to pull to keep you up. There are a lot of things you can work on right now. Some of those can be looking up every once in a while, or another is keeping that head back when working on the computer or even in everyday positions out walking and such. Studies show that the average person is looking down at their phone 2-3 hours per day about 5 years ago. (Recently found out it is over 4 hours per day). When we are looking down for so long, there is no question on why the neck can be so tight. So, look up and enjoy the Tahoe sun or take a break and go enjoy the Tahoe sun. Check out this link for more details and some interesting infographics on what these stats look like.
