How to set health goals

Speaking of being outside, I wanted to discuss your health goals and how to set reachable goals for your health and lifestyle. Any professional out there will go over your goals as one of the first things they will address. The factors that will drive a person to any professional will be things like “why are you in this office now”, “what can I improve” and “why is this important.” As soon as anyone tells you to do something such as “you should lose weight”, unless this is something that you want, it won’t last. So, in setting your own goals, what do you want the most? Think more practical with your goals such as “I want to make it up the stairs without feeling winded”, “I want to play with my kids”, “I want to go for a bike ride”, “I want to go skiing or hang out at the lake”, etc.. Some sort of activity or functional daily goal is much better as a goal than just “I want to feel better”. Rarely will a goal like the latter get you where you want to be. For me personally, my goals have changed over the years. My goals are simply to get out and do what I love to do, like biking, hiking, skiing, playing with my dogs. I want to be in shape to be able to do those things. It is those little things day in and day out that make the difference. For instance, if I go to the gym 5 days a week, will it keep me on my bike, probably not. It will probably take away from my biking time, so it is something that I won’t achieve. This is a different way to reach my goals, but it is not the way I would like to get there, which means I would probably fail. Getting healthy is important but stepping back and realizing what you want out of that good health can help you enjoy the journey to better health. 

I talk with a lot of my patients about preventative care. So, once you reach that goal of being able to hike or bike or whatever as much as you’d like, now what? You typically would want to maintain that and keep that healthy body going. This is where some of those “different” activities come in to maintain good health. Not disregarding nutrition, but lots to discuss on this topic. Just remember, little changes go a long way. But again, what do you really want? And then do those little things every day to get it. If you want to get to the top of the stairs without being winded and you don’t exercise to get there one day, it’s not the end of the world. But continue to work on it and it will come. Going back to preventative care, if you do those little stretches and exercises to keep yourself at that top level, it will only help and continue to reach higher goals than you may have intended. There are a lot of factors for goal setting and I’m not a psychologist, but I ask patients why they are in my office and don’t say just to get out of pain. The pain is just stopping you from something that is more important. See you out on the trails.
