How can you find relief from a disc herniation? A disc herniation is when the disc pushes back into the nerve as it exits the spine and can cause anything from pain to numbness and weakness down the leg. Disc herniations are more of a pressure type or repetitive type injury. The typical pattern is when we sit, we put pressure on the disc and the disc will push back into the nerve. This would mean that flexion type exercise, sitting, stretching, etc. is more likely to cause irritation to the disc compared to an extension or bending back motion. Bending back tends to push that disc back forward or at least put less pressure on the disc. Keep that in mind with some of the exercises that you do. Extension type positions are usually better off for these types of injuries. Trying to avoid extreme pressure like sneezing, going to the bathroom, or coughing are all good as much as you can obviously. Also, sitting for a long period of time can cause irritation to the area. Usually there is a direction that you can bend that can help the pain go away or become less for a short time. This is called a directional preference. Again, pressure and repetitive flexion movements are usually things that you want to avoid. Also, lifting anything with improper lifting mechanics while having a disc herniation will likely be very painful and continue to irritate the disc. Find a direction that you can move that helps alleviate some of the pain.
