Have you said to yourself “I just woke up and my back started hurting for no reason,” or “I don’t know what I did, but my back or neck hurts all of a sudden.”
A common ailment I see in my office is repetitive trauma. What that typically means is you have a job, activity, or routine that you do a similar motion over and over again. For example, sitting at a computer all day or bending over and lifting things. With repetitive trauma you are putting stress on certain areas of the body and spine that will eventually fail and can get what is called a joint restriction. When doing motion, you want a smooth curve of the spine without a pivot point or flat area. Sometimes it is extremely easy to see at an end range stretch. The reason these are a concern is because when these restrictions do not allow you to move well, this will cause inflammation and swelling to occur, which will then cause muscle guarding, which then can cause more joint restrictions. This loop can continue until you address it. This is concerning because pain is usually the later thing to show up in these repetitive injuries. You may typically get stiffness or muscle guarding that starts, but then will get worse. This is a common concern in that research shows that 80% of people will have back pain of some sort in their lifetime.
As a chiropractor, this type of condition is my specialty. We are able to get those joints moving again and put less stress on the entire system or area. On top of getting adjustments at my office, we go over work and life modifications to stop the recurring problem and we give you homework of exercises and stretches to know what you can do on your own and stop the recurrence or worsening. Research has shown that chiropractors have been able to get remarkable results such as decreasing pain, improved function, less medication use, and better quality of life. Today, these are common goals that most of us share, especially for those here in South Lake Tahoe. We are here to break you out of that bad cycle, get you moving, and feeling better. Let us know what we can do to help.
