A common concern some people have for visiting a chiropractor is being scared that all a chiropractor will do is “pop” your spine or joints. To clear one misconception, there are various research studies that support the use of chiropractic care for many conditions and are relatively “safe” (clarifying that no treatment is “perfectly” safe, always a little risk in everything). When compared to traditional medical care, there is much less risk of further injury or worsening of symptoms with visiting your chiropractor than a lot of other alternatives, such as medication, and with improved results as well. So when it comes to healing, there are a lot of options out there, and finding what works for you is important. However, understanding that chiropractic has continued to show great results for many conditions such as headaches, jaw pain, neck pain, back pain, and down to the feet as well, can give you the assurance that this may be a great option for you. Sorry for my tangent and back to the topic at hand. Although there is very low risk with manual manipulations or adjustments, there are alternatives. There is a few options such as this machine that goes by a few names such as an activator, vibracussor, or arthrostim. Whatever you know it as, it is doing a similar job of getting your joints to move a little more with less force. This little tool is pushing on an area repetitively and will feel like something is tapping you with a finger quickly over and over again. It then can increase the pressure on you as the patient, when the doctor is applying more pressure.
Who I would use this for:
Typically I would use this on someone who may have osteoporosis, may be nervous of manual adjustments, someone who may not tolerate some of the needed positions for manual adjustments, if the area of concern is too tight to get any other movement, or specific areas of the body such as the collar bone, front part of ribs or chest, or jaw. I really like having this because it gives me another option to help the doctor cater to what you need to feel better. I always joke around saying that I, as the doctor, will never beat your muscles. If you are too concerned, nervous, or even just really tight, I may not even try a manual adjustment due the possibly causing an aggravation to a strained muscle due to guarding as an example. This may be a great option for you and it may not be, but that will be addressed with each individual and condition. If you have any other questions, feel free to let us know.
